Edwin R. Lawton diary, 1862.

A diary of Lawton's trip to Minnesota as an assistant to Chicago photographer Adrian J. Ebell, photographing Minnesota Indians. He describes magic lantern shows given by Ebell in the Chicago area, then details the trip to Minnesota, with descriptions of overland and river travel and of Mississippi river towns in Illinois, Iowa, and Minnesota. He discusses the weather, travel difficulties, accommodations, agricultural settlements near Indian lands, Indian life and customs, Indian disturbances at the Lower Sioux Agency (Aug. 13); and troop movements in the area.
